Question #13: Does Your IT Vendor Insist on Both Off-Site and On-Site Backups?

Many business owners and IT leaders are unsure of the right questions to ask a perspective IT vendor.

Hi, I’m Ross Brouse President of Continuous Networks, and today I want to talk about the 21 questions you need to ask a perspective IT vendor before you trust them with your network and data.

Question 13, Do they insist on both an offsite as well as an on-site backup, in addition to utilizing an instant restore feature or are they letting you rely on undocumented outdated forms of backup, such as taper or removable hard drive?

Backups are one of the most overlooked aspects of an IT infrastructure. I’ve met so many owners and company leaders in my 20 years of experience that believe that the backup they have is sufficient. However, that belief quickly changes when they are asked to recount how their last backup restore test performed.

Additionally, most backup and restore expectations can never be met because first and foremost the backup process is not documented. Most businesses today could not survive the loss of their data, and many business owners I have met simply do not know how or if their backups are working. This is just completely unacceptable and business owners and leaders need to demand that their backup processes are documented and tested. Not all backups are created equal, and it is vital that your business is utilizing a documented backup system and restore capability that will meet your expectations for data recovery.
